Applications for PhD program

The Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto is accepting applications for its PhD program for the academic year 2009/2010.
All full-time doctoral students receive four years of funding full tuition plus a stipend of $15,000 Canadian (in 2008/2009) each year. The Faculty provides doctoral students with numerous opportunities to participate in a wide variety of international and interdisciplinary research studies. Research areas include critical information studies; library and information science; archives and record management; information systems, media, and design; cultural heritage; and knowledge management and information management; and collaborative programs including Book History and Print Culture; and Knowledge Media Design. An Abstract for Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM)

Abstract

Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) is a method that uses best evidences in decision-making of clinical practice for certain patient in his/her special situation, regarding reliability and efficacy of evidences. EBM needs clinical skills, information retrieval expertise (i.e. PICO search strategy), appraisal and critical thinking, and applying findings to reduce risks and improve care processes.
So EBM users continue Evidence-Based Practice captured in 5A (Ask, Acquire, Appraise, Apply and Assess) to create a Critically Appraisal Topic (CAT) (2, 5). They use some tools like Journal Club in Appraise of quality (5). Other way of Quality control of evidences is to classify them in three or four Levels(1) to determine the Best Evidence. These levels ranked by the type of evident studies. For example Systematic review is base stone of EBM,(4) Randomized Control Trials (RCTs), Clinical Trials, etc. are other useful types.
Most famous pioneers of EBM are Avicenna in his book The Canon of Medicine in the 11th century(3,6) and A. Cochrane, D. Sackett, and G. Guyatt in the 20th century(1). Nowadays some websites and databases like Cochrane.org, Cochrane Library, TRIP Database, and BMJ.com(1) made available EBM documents.

ILISA blossoms again

I feels something new from LIS and it's activities these days, Glancing to what Iranian Librarian have done within last months and what they are going to do in the near future. Just by the end of the current year, They are going to hold many workshops and conferences in various significant subject. Looking at ILISA conference calender, you're going to be agree with me, with no doubt.
It's really interesting that the The Ilisa next workshop(which is about how to write a scientific article) is fully booked! Though it's going to be on August 16th but it has been reserved by the fans at the very first week...
It's even more interesting when you find that in September and October we are going to have at least 5-6 conferences relating to LIS, Last by not least it's very nice to have ADKA's first conference. They are really good in organizing, planning and most of all in team working.

anyway, I just came to say I proud of being an Iranian Librarian, wholeheartedly.

Ilisa first workshop:DONE!

The workshop "innovation for librarians" was held on July 19th 2007 in The documentation center of NLI. Gathering many librarians from different organizations, libraries and even various cities made the workshop more attractive. We introduce a new group entitled "Shakhka" which refere to the group of those "desperado"s who have dedicated their life to the Iranian Librarian Association!! It's a kind of joke but the main idea is adorable as the aboved dedicated persons,only think about ILISA and it's improve.
Anyway, the workshop had two part, in the theoretic part we learned about innovations and different techniques emphasizing on vision and thinking. We have to respect to our mind as a pioneer factory of creation.
The rest, was about team working, using the mentioned techniques to solve hypothetical problems faced library sciences in Iran. Actually, we are supposed to use this in a near future too. I hope our innovative minds not be diminish within daily problems in our society. This workshop was a magnificent remind for all of us that the hope makes human future and while there is a hope, there is a way.

Toady nearly to 2 months that I could not update my blog because of a terrible accident occurred for me. Wednesday 23rd may a motorcycle with high speed crashed to my body and I was thrown 50 meters to sidewalk. This bad accident caused to break my main leg bone. Any way in a surgical operation, an expert orthopedics team from Sina hospital inserts platinum in my broken bone. During these days I have not connected to internet intentionally that I published a post entitled “living with out internet”.

Wow! this year going to be a the year of seminars & congresses in medical library science in different places in Iran. isn't it fabulous to see this kind of academic movements happen so quickly into our field? One of this congresses will be held in Isfahan with the title: The 1st National Congress of Scientometrics in Medical Sciences from 2008 Mar 05 to 2008 Mar 06. The other one will be in Kerman, as a 2nd medical library science students seminar , and the third one will be in Tehran as : 2nd medical library & information sciences in Shahid Behesti University, paramedical school.

First I should notify that we have good iranian open access journals especially in english language like webology but i repeat again that open access movement and its goals isn`t showed and introduced clearly to the members of Iranian scientific socity.

what we ( Iranian Information Specialists ) can do to promote this movemement ?

In the world, this movemnt have a loud voice that is spred through various media. for example, this movement have one exclusive TV channel in Hotbird and many specialized serials and journals that publishing hot and scientific articles about this.
I think we i.e Iranian Information Specialists should:
1- write more and more about this movement in our public and specialized serials and journals.
2- stand up specialized seminars about this hot topic in our universities and other scientific centers.
3- criticize this movement with scientific language and show its real benifits and privileges .
4- write in our weblogs and websites about it.
5- help to establish more and more open access journals.

what is difference between "free access" and "open access"?

I wrote following text to complete Mr Zerehsaz's posts.

There seems to be a general misunderstanding that the aim of the Open Access movement is to make the scientific research literature free online. But there is a difference between "free access" and "open access".
This distinction was part of what motivated the Bethesda definition of Open Access Principles that we published in the first issue of Open Access Now (July 14, 2003). That definition clearly states that access to the information should be free, but in addition the work should be open to re-use and redistribution, and that it should be deposited immediately upon publication in a public online repository (such as Pub Med Central).
Publishers who offer free online access on their own websites still have a long way to go before their research articles can be considered Open Access. The benefits and promise of Open Access will only be realized when this distinction is clear in the minds of authors and publishers. Only then can the literature move from being ‘free’ to being truly ‘open’.

I wrote in my previous post that Open Access isn`t popular in Iran and academics don`t have tendancy to publish their articles in open access journals. The question is why ?

my response to this question is:

1- This movement and its goals and benefits is unknown in Iran yet.

2- The open access journals don`t developed as wish .

3- most of this kind of journals don`t get scientific credit ( That `s important factor ) from their science society then their authors also can`t get awards or privileges that others get from their article publishing in non open access scientific journals because The later one is supported with academics and core scientists.

4- authors generally concern about the copy right of their works.

5- and the authors get money ( what so ever little ) from the scientific journals for publishing their articles but open access journals generally don`t give any money to authors.

Publishing researches under unique name

As researchers in the Science ministry and Ministry of Health used to publish their research under two separate names ( e.g. University of Tehran, Tehran University of Medical Sciences) ,this lead to decline Iran’s rank in research compared with another country.
Based on agreement between University of Tehran and Tehran University of Medical Science, researchers in TUMS must publish their articles under the unique name. “Medical Sciences/ University of Tehran”. Following this rule will upgrade UT’s rank in the Web of Science and another scientific databases.

Recieving the Award (2005) of the Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Scholarship,Kayvan Kousha has compeleted the Tehran university Ph.D. program about a months ago.Now ILISA (Iranian Library and Information Sciences Association) is going to have him as a next lecturer for the next monthly session in the National Library of Iran.The session will be about "A Comparison between ISI and Web-Extracted Citations: Application of Webometrics for Studying Formal and Informal Scholarly Communications" and it will be on June 21th.
About ILISA:It's really interesting for me myself as the Iranian thesis are going to be more qualitative and ILISA is going to focus more on methodology which is the essential key for research.Iran scientific improvement has changed a lot during the recent decades but the it's qualitative improvement is remarkable as we go on within last years.

Open Access in IRAN

I`d like to write in this weblog more about open access especially OA in IRAN. Open access is a new movement but not new idea or new goal. Human beings fight for freedom over their past history and always fight for remove the barriers and restrictions against the access to science and scientific outputs. This movement orginated from this old holy goal ....................

But in IRAN , Open Access is n`t popular especially among the academics and the members of science society .........

Wendsday and thursday of last week, Medical information literacy workshop was held at IRANDOC. This workshop was especial for medical and health librarians, medical students and health science academic staff. This workshop was run by Dr. Mansourian who has PHD degree from Sheffield University.

Subjects of this workshop are:

How to determine informaiton needs and define its importance.

Encyclopaedia of Library and Information Sciences in Persian

It's really interesting for me that our challenges about writing in nowadays scientific language,English,has been ended up with something special that makes our active Iranian Bloggers to shake hands with the world!
As a first post, I would like to write about an Iranian-American Librarian.Honestly,I really do not sure whether she is exactly a famous Iranian librarian in United States or not but at least her Persian name has fooled me "Sara Jaffarian".
There is an award for Exemplary Humanities Programs specially for schools which named Sara Jaffarian that shows her outstanding activities in ALA.It's a cash award of $4,000!It's really nice if Sara will be aware of our activities in Iran,ain't it?Oh,by the way,here's the link.

I am very happy to contribute in this weblog. I have choice to communicate and distribute and improve my knowledge and expriences. thanks Mrs. Karami for this choice.
As you know we have group weblog in persian languge and now we would like to create an english version in order to communicate to people who can not read persian. I as one member of grouping weblog will try to reflect every subject which I post in persian version and I hope we can familiar other people to Iranian library and librarianship and reflect every events in this matter.
